Cornea transplant, also known as keratoplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace part of the cornea with corneal tissue from a donor. The cornea is the clear, front window of the eye that plays a vital role in the eye’s ability to see clearly by focusing light into the eye. Corneal transplant can treat conditions such as Fuchs’ dystrophy, keratoconus, trauma, infection or diseases that damage any part of the cornea. However, like any surgery, corneal transplant surgery has risks. One major risk is tissue rejection, when your body sees the new cornea as a foreign object and tries to get rid of it. Your doctor can give you medicine to help stop the rejection and save your cornea. Corneal transplant can also cause other eye problems, including infection.
